Tokyo Olympics 2020: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty thrilling victory over world No. 3 pair

Satwik and Chirag took their opponents in both attack and defense in an hour and six minute contest, which turned out to be a thrilling thriller.

TOKYO: Indian men's doubles pair of SatwikSairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made a sensational start by beating world number three Yang Li and Chinese Taipei's Chi-Lin in a thrilling Group A match. First Olympic campaign was on Saturday.

World No. 10, Chirag and Satwik are third seed and won 21-16, 16-21, 27-25 over to win back-to-back titles at the Toyota Thailand Open, Yonex Thailand Open. And the BWF World Tour. Sued. Finals earlier this year.

In the decider, the Indian pair took a 2-0 lead, which was quickly wiped out by their opponents. Two pairs 10-10 from there. Neck-twisted.

A net error from Satwik allowed the Chinese Taipei pair to maintain a one-point lead at the break.

Satwik and Chirag trailed 11-13, but two points in a row helped level the match.

With the opponents leading 17-14, the Indians are in trouble. Chirag did poorly after a powerful smash, but Satwik pulled one smash and made it 15-18.

Two lucky net cards helped the Chinese pair reach 24-24 before scoring match points. But they failed to change that and then with the shuttle running longer, once again had another point of the match by India.

Chirag and Satwik caught it when their opponent made a goof on the forecourt this time.

Earlier, Praneeth lost to Zilberman in the knockout stage and damaged his qualification.

2019 World Championship bronze medalist, now ranked 15th Praneeth will now face world 29th ranked Mark Kalzou of the Netherlands.

In the opening game, Praneeth took an early 8-4 lead, but Zilberman soon turned the table around with five consecutive points as the Indian made several compelling errors.

The Indian entered the break with a point advantage after an error from Zilberman.

Praneeth reduced his execution to a 15-13 lead over Zilberman. Israel dominated the shuttler trial and zoomed 19-14 as the Indian missed a few shots.

Cross-court smash helped Zilberman score six game points and seal his fourth attempt.

Zilberman worked well as Praneeth sent the first two shuttles longer. Israel will soon have an 8-5 lead.
