England vs India 2021: Mayank Agarwal will misses first Test against England

Star Indian opener Mayank Agarwal has been ruled out of the first Test with a injury.

Notably, Mayank rolled his head during a practice session ahead of the five-match Test series between India and England. The absence of Mayank Agarwal will be a huge for Team India as he is expected to start the innings alongside Rohit Sharma.

Mayank Agarwal last played for India during the Border Gavaskar Trophy. However, he did not start the innings at the time and played as a middle order batsman for the team.

At a pre-match press conference, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane spoke of Mayank's injury: "Mayank Agarwal was hit on the helmet during the nets, and the medical team is assessing.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released an official statement.

"Opening batsman Mayank Agarwal suffered a helmet injury while batting in the Indian net session at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Monday."

"The BCCI medical team assessed him, and a concussion test was performed. He showed signs of concussion and missed the initial test with England. The 30-year-old's condition is stable and will be under close medical supervision," BCCI added.

India, led by Virat Kohli, will take on Joe Root-led England in the next five-match Test series. Also, the five-match Marquee Test series will be part of the new WTC cycle. Both teams want to start the WTC event with series wins to their names. The first Test starts in Nottingham on August 4.

Mayank Agarwal is a strong contender for the partnership with Rohit Sharma

Team India's first choice in Test cricket is Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill. However, half of the opening pair were injured before the Marquee series. Schubman Gill suffered a calf injury and missed the entire five-match series. The expected recovery time for a gill injury is at least 3 months. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been replaced by Prithvi Shaw in the Indian team.

Now India have only a handful of players starting the innings alongside Rohit Sharma. Mayank Agarwal leads the innings in the Test series. However, now he has missed the first Test. Other options for India are Abhimanyu Ishwaran, Prithvi Shaw and KL Rahul. However, some reports say that only KL Rahul has been included in the Indian squad as a middle order batsman.

"Shubman Gill was injured. But then Shubman Gill did well in the WTC final and will also play the first Test, but now he will not be available," Aakash Chopra had earlier said.
